Frequently Asked Questions
What is a synovial cyst?
It is a completely benign nodule, very frequent in the hands and wrists, caused by herniation of part of the synovium and joint capsule. Many cases disappear on their own; when it causes pain, compresses nerves or vessels, or limits movement, intervention may range from immobilization and medication to needle aspiration with injection or surgical removal (with possible recurrence). Important: tumors with malignant potential can be mistaken for the cyst — specialized evaluation is essential.
